I am a firm believer that a good leader can learn the necessary skills to be an effective leader.
- a true leader accepts responsibility for his/her choices and the impact those choices have on others;
- a true leader has the courage to stand up for his/her convictions even in the face of unpopularity;
- a true leader shows compassion for others, not just in words, but in deeds and actions;
- a true leader serves humanity for a greater purpose, not just for earthly rewards.”
Skills that Leaders can work on to be more effective:
- Self-awareness: What gets you up in the morning? Being aware of your own strengths and weaknesses is critical to your own development as a leader. A positive mental attitude and awareness of what your key motivations are.
- Understanding of others: An appreciation of how we are all different and a desire to know what makes others tick. Are you able to adapt to others? Can you get along with most people?
- Managing: This is a fundamental skill of being able to learn to manage your time, resources and most importantly yourself.
- Good communication: Good two-way communication skills are essential. The ability to get to the information you need and the skill to sell the information that you need to get across to others. See my post on the Language of Leaders.
- Working in groups: Understanding the dynamics of groups and how you can get the most out of collaboration whilst avoiding the pitfalls of group dynamics.
